Cant believe its so long since I came back! So its time I wrote my report. Here I go:

Day 1
6.30 am flight which got delayed at Philly and we got in an hour late at Cancun. But it was great stepping out of the airport in warm air and sunny skies. Hola!!! Priya, Vishy and Arushi have arrived!
We stepped outside the Cancun airport to see Continental guy carrying my name board. And it starts raining sudenly on a nice sunny day! It was nice that they ask me and my daughter Arushi (18 mth) to stay under cover till they load the car.

Then we got to their main office and did paperwork, checked the car (it stopped raining and saw a great rainbow) I was late to click the rainbow and only got Vishy checking out the car. We talked to this lady who guides you around. She suggested a nie place to eat late lunch. We decided to drive to this place and shop some supplies at Walmart (on the way). But we were so lost into some inner streets and then asked our way out to local shopkeepers. We were irritated with the initial driving experience, confusing or maybe differnt road signs and Arushi cranky in the car seat! Finally ended up eating at Dominoes!! They just gave us a free lunch as they were later than 15 mins in serving. That perked us up to continue to Chichen and got us back in our spirits. We then saw Walmart on the way, got water, chips, milk for Arushi and also drank some coconut water (yummy) which we thought we'll pig on everyday, but unfortunately this was the only one in the trip :(
Filled gas at Pemex near Walmart. (after me giving warnings to be careful at gas stations to Vishy, it all turned out fine) Drove on Highway 180 towards Valladolid. It got pretty dark and 6pm or so before we reached Valladolid. I wanted to make it for the Light show at Chichen Itza, but we had to drive the one lane road to Chichen from Valladolid. It was a dangerous drive as it was dark, and in the last stretch we were caught up between big trucks who were racing each other! But it was about 7.45pm when we reached Hotel Mayaland. The foyer was so grand and nice with lots of trees, fountains aorund. As soon as Vishy saw this, he started saying, Lets extend a day tomorrow here and go to Tulum a day later. I was in no mood to delay my trip to the dream beach, so just kept mum. Checked in to find nice clean beds, big room, refrigerator and a nice big balcony with chairs and view of the temple.

I stuffed the milk & yogurts (avoid upset stomach with the good probiotic stuff which didnt work as we all got sick later on!) inside the fridge and we all bathed and dressed up for a meal at Hacienda Chichen. HC was a nice place too, nice green property. They had the live music going on when we entered and Arushi started dancing to the music and songs. We ordered some pasta and some salad.

Arushi was sleepy (as it was 10.30pm in Boston and she sleeps at 7.30!) so we hurried and crashed back on our beds. Oh, and they provided Arushi with a crib which was nice as she slept immediately.

Preeya,

I hate to tell you this, but it's Snapfish. Their site doesn't let you link to photos (at least I couldn't get mine to work). I had to upload my photos to Flickr for the ones I wanted to use in the forum.

I had already uploaded photos on Shutterfly, butthey are resized images, so they are small, the snapfish were nice and big! :(
Well, anyway Enjoy!

OMG...Preeya..your little one is seriously adorable! How old?

Mayaland looks great..I always say I am going to stay inland..but it's really hard to tear myself away from the beach. I will never forget taking my grandkids to Xpuha and Akumal last year..they were 7 mo and 3 at the time..what an experience that was! Kinda sad they won't remember..just a good reason to take them again..and I have another one that hasn't gotten there yet...so we have to go again!

which didnt work as we all got sick later on

Hey preeya, what a beautiful little girl.

I too have gotten sick in Mexico every time I have gone and regardless of what precautions I took EXCEPT this last time. I went to visit my doctor and he gave me a script for Cipro (ciprofloxacin) which I took twice daily from the day before I left until the day I returned. I drank the water in the room. I ate the ice. I tempted fate with reckless abandon and nothing. I was perfectly ok. I'll never travel again without it.

Day 3

Arushi woke me up at 5am, so I played a bit with her in bed and then we dressed up to go to the beach when there was a tiny bit of light outside. Clicked pictures and walked in the water which I was desperately waiting to do since last night after getting here. Arushi was just scared of the water coming at her and kept saying "No, No" She was scared of the water all the time we were there! But Loved the sand!

Came back to the room, woke Vishy up and hit the beach again with Arushi's sand toys. We took long dips in the sea taking turns to watch Arushi. The water was so warm, calm and clear, this was heaven. Now Vishy knew what I was talking about!!
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b7cf29b3127cceb0793ecc134800000025110AatGzRu4cN2 Pg
After 2 or so hours, came out of the sea and sand to have breakfast. The guy who served us (I think was not the real chef, as we saw the real one the last day who was dressed and was serving items decorated professionally) was really very likeable and had smiles on his face. He made us anything we asked for. Like any fruits cut up with yogurt and granola for Arushi and Huevos Mexicana for us (sorry dont have pics of the food as we were famished and just dug in) He also gave some toast and some donuts. Also OJ (from can). There were nice guests whom we spoke to while eating. This was heaven! Beach, food made to order and nice people to speak with!! Then got to the room and unpacked, bathed while Arushi slept.
Decided to go to Pueblo and exchange some more money as we exchanged only some while coming out of the Airport cambio (it had bad rates) But it was Nov 2nd and bank was closed. So just headed to Don Cafetos for lunch. We both had Chille Rellenos and Arushi has rice and beans which was spilled all over the place. They had OK food, OK service but amazing Chayagra and fruit drink!
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b7cf29b3127cceb0793c91131400000026100AatGzRu4cN2 Pg

I have to say one thing here, that everyone on the first glance started to speak to us in Spanish as they thought I was one (being Indian=brown) but after I only spoke Hola, Commo esta, and then I said Non espanol, noone believed! Probably they did when I spoke Indian to Vishy :)
After lunch we just walked around, window shopped, bought Arushi a nice summer dress.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b7cf29b3127cceb0793d81539c00000025110AatGzRu4cN2 Pg

After window shopping we went to San Francisco, just got some beers, milk and Gerber for Arushi (I ran out on my apple sauces as I fed her that when she was not eating much of her rice and beans all this while) On the way back we booked our massages for Day 5. Here comes the hilarious part, when I asked for Chandree, the person reserving as well as Vishy looked at me as if I had uttered some friend's name (benefits of the forum that Windy city had suggested! Thanks!) Though Chandree was not available, we got it booked at the Zahra cliffs. It was already 4ish, so I wanted to to go see the Sian Kaan visitor center and beaches, but Vishy wanted to hang out at Zulum beach, but we drove in and did not find where the center was after entering the arch, drove ahead to find a camping beach which was not maintained at all. It had seaweed and tons and tons of platic bottles and junk up on the shore, but we managed to get a few pics and get back to Zulum, when it was dark :( and we couldnt hang out at either of the beaches (ugh one day gone!)
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b7cf29b3127cceb079337bd25100000025110AatGzRu4cN2 Pg

Got some beer out on out patio while feeding Arushi her dinner. Got dressed and walked to Ana-y-jose for dinner. It was a bad choice as noone bothered to see we were at the counter, then just made us sit for a long time before they got us menus. After asking if we could get any food made Veg (Non carne, pollo, fillet) they drew a blank and I just had cheese and tomato while Vishy had Veg Fajitas, which looked good. He said they were OK, I tasted and it was OK.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b7cf29b3127cceb0793131532a00000026100AatGzRu4cN2 Pg
Our main reason to come to this place was to see their entertaining Mayan Coffee flambe, we ordered it and they came back saying no Flambe, thoght maybe no Coffee, asked for their Flambe dessert, they just said no flambe. So we just got our checks and came to Zulum disappointed. Didnt know why there was no Flambe, could not understand Spanish and there was noone to explain it to us :( I came back to our room with stomach cramps and was howling with pain for about 20 mins and then took some medicines and we all slept.

I was scared of food, so had the Yogurt-granola and Vishy has eggs with onions and salsa. Also we shared great talks with people living in Zulum from different parts of the world! We decided to take the day easy (which didnt happen till the end! thats why I want to go back again!)

Wanted to take our clothes for laundry in Pueblo, but Eduardo suggested that we leave it with them as their laundry guy can do it and they will get it back on Day 5 morning. I was reluctant about it, if there was a delay..but Vishy said why do you want to go searching for it..so be it. We bathed and stepped to go out for some shopping and lunch in Pueblo. Filled gas at Pemex near the Sanfrancisco store and I found a beauty salon where I got my manicure & pedicure done :D while Arushi slept in the car with Vishy. Then we went into Charlies for a late lunch. It was a nice setting, service was OK, and food was OK too. Didnt remember what we ate as you will know why I was distracted ahead. I'm clicking the food and Arushi's pictures and lo behold I see a familiar face behind us. It was Phyllis!!!! You can see her in the picture behind Arushi.

I went up to her and she recognized me immediately. We all introduced ourselves and confirmed our meeting for tonight. Asked Phyllis if it was a good idea to still go to the Tulum ruins at 3pm? She said yes and so we went there after!
Drove to the Tulum ruins which was filled with tourists and it didnt impress us much after Chichen. We didnt even swim there as it was filled with people.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b7cf29b3127cceb078cc26b2a700000036100AatGzRu4cN2 Pg
Just took some pics and came back to Zulum to see a beautiful sunset from our room on the jungle!
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b7cf29b3127cceb078cd34f22d00000036100AatGzRu4cN2 Pg
I again got the stomach cramps and was rolling in bed. I was cursing the cheese that I ate because there is some kind of cheese (i dont know which) that I cant digest and felt funny while eating at both Ana-y-jose and Charlies, and we were drinking bottled water only. Vishy suggested I rest and we can cancel/reschedule meeting Phyllis. I screamed Noooo. we have many places to go and do things, and I dont want to miss out on meeting Phyllis. So after my pain subsided in a few mins, we dressed up and were in time to drive to Zamas to meet Phyllis and Kevin.

It was a great evening with good food and good service. I had Penne with Pesto and Vishy had a pizza. Great conversations, references to the forum, and how I followed and analyzed every tip in there. It was hilarious. Phyllis also gave us some imp tip that tips are included here and we were tipping handsomely before, but it was OK. After dinner Arushi was getting cranky so we just packed and went back to Zulum and slept. Now Vishy gets up in the middle of the night screaming with stomach ache. I could'nt understand what was happening as Arushi was also cranky more than usual today and had a bit loose stools and kept saying "poopy poopy" all the time as she had tummy ache too! Well, gave some medicines to Vishy and we slept back.

Everyday breakfast was at Zulum as it was included. I felt bad that we missed out on other places for b/f but it was good this way as it was too much packing, dressing to many places with Arushi. We did that anyway, but atleast b/f was at home (Zulum in Tulum that is!)

Oh no! Well we thought you'd be safe after 3pm, hoped the groups would be gone from the ruins by then. Oh well, at least you can say you've seen them, right???? :)

And I didn't realize you were feeling crummy either! :( That's a real bummer! You guys are real troopers, not letting it get you down at all!

Had so much fun at Zamas with y'all.... chatting about Boston, Chicago, Tulum.... and Arushi is just the cutest!

Phyllis: There was a bit of crowd at Tulum ruins, but it was not much as I can imagine compared to the bus loads in the morning! But we were just tired and after Chichen it didnt impress much I believe.
Oh its cold in Watertown now, going to snow this weekend for sure!
Arushi is great, as usual her naughty self, in love with pens which she wants to write on all our walls and furniture!

Gale, don't you mean when they belong to someone else's precious little ones? :) Our greatest joy is to send the nieces and nephews fingerpainting kits for birthdays. I claim it's to stimulate their creativity but it's actually to get back at my older brother and sister for picking on me! :D

We woke up with Arushi and went out for sunrise. It was our last full day in Tulum :( I read a book(it was a to do!) on the beach bed and we played in sand, water, took walks, dips (missing that now)

We had a huge breakfast of Yogurt and Granola with some fruits and eggs too! Showered and I asked Vishy if he would drive me on the Coba road to see the roadside shops. He said OK as it was Arushi's nap time and she could sleep while we drove. We stopped at this amazing shop which had colorful beautiful ceramics.

Vishy clicked pics while I shopped. I picked so much ceramics after bargaining. I felt it was too much and some broke till we got home. I also realized that I did not get macthing ones :( But Vishy was in the mood to let me splurge! Those colors were so appealing, I wanted to buy it all! We emptied our pesos here, except for some change. Didnt know what we'll do for dinner!
After my shopping spree, Arushi was still sleeping and Vishy said lets get your to-do list done before our massages and drive to Akumal while she slept. I had to, had to snorkel there! We drove to Akumal by the time we parked, Arushi woke up. Then it was a late lunch for us at "Lol-ha"restaurant. I had to go snorkel and rented a snorkel gear and Vishy was more than happy to relax, see sports on TV there, drink beer and eat fries with Arushi.
http://im1.shutterfly.com/procserv/47b7cf29b3127cceb07944d4925d00000026100AatGzRu4cN2 Pg

I jumped right infront of Lol-ha and swam a bit inwards and then towards the left as Minniemex suggested (thanks!) Initially just found grass and then suddenly I saw these beautiful things, it was magnificent!! I had only some time, and it was an hour by the time I came out. I dont have pics yet as I have'nt given teh camera for developing. It was an experience which I want to remember forever!
Came out thinking, Vishy is missing something, he will never know till he sees my pics! It was 1pm (3pm Boston) and my hunger had almost vanished, full on sealife :D So I just got Guac and Vishy got a Veg Burrito. I had my first Mexican fresh OJ and it was so delicious! Vishy had a Margarita, that was good too.
We packed and went drove to Zahra for our massages in time! First was my Chocolate exfoliation and then Vishy's Mayan Clay.

Took great sunset pics at the Zahra beach and headed out for early dinner.
Drove to "Dos Ceibas". It was a bit spooky for me as it was so dark and we saw crabs running on the road, then it was so dark to get to their restaurant from the parking, I was glad that we did'nt live there as it was so dark and spooky. They said we were very early for dinner, but we could drink. We had the whole place to ourselves and it was very romantic! We had the best drinks! I think I was a bit drunk on that Caipirihna (right spelling?) or was I just drunk on a great day?

Do you see how the lights were turned into hearts by Vishy's camera trick below, it was ohhh so romantic for me ;)

Surprisingly there were a lot of kids and Arushi was screaming for friends, guess she was bored of mom and dad for so many days! She made friends and was very happy and I had the buffet and Vishy had a pasta. It was a good ambience, OK food, good service, nice upscale place.
Came back and chatted a bit, sat outside on Zulum's deck in the dark listening to the waves. It was a magical and perfect day. Could not ask for more!!
Well...Maybe more days in Tulum:D

Do you really want to read the leaving day story?? Its sad to write this day, but I'll try.

Day 6

Woke up and went for the cloudy sunrise outside. It was so cold and windy. We took a long hour walk down south on the beach. Vishy decided he had his best swim last night to wash his Clay at the Zahra beach and wanted to keep that memory. I wanted to go one last time in the water.

It was so rough, choppy and huge waves pushing me out when I tried to go in, almost telling me that its time to leave!:( We had our last breakfast which was made by a new chef, very professional and made fruit designs etc (but I have to say the service is slow with just one person making breakfast from scratch for everyone, but it went with the lazy vacationing atmosphere) It was good that we tipped our chef from before handsomely as we kinda liked his non-professinoal way and that smiling face. He filled in milk for Arushi every morning in her sippy cup! We learned from our Zulum friends that maybe we washed our teeth and Arushi's bottle in the tap water and that might be the reason for our stomach upset! I was so mad that we did not think of that, though I did read about this! We we were feeling OK today as we took some precautions yesterday not to eat out of the way...well now we know the reason.
Vishy learned that our laundry clothes came back as is and wet as Eduardo said he was off and then the guys were not working, we thought they just forgot our bag to give for laundry. I "almost" told Vishy, "I told you so and we should've taken it ourselves", well..not on the last day. So just decided to do them home, no big deal.
Packed, showered and gave our remaining water bottles & beer to Eduardo for good use. We were late to the airport for our afternoon flight, Vishy drove really fast (thank god a cop did not pull us), dropped our car with no problems and checked in quickly.

At security then asked me if i had any liquids in my backpack, I replied yes, Arushi's milk, then when we crossed security and realized that even a water bottle came through with us!! Got some duty free things and flew back to Boston where Arushi did not sleep at all and wanted to climb up and look at passengers behind us or run and wake sleeping people. If you come across such kids on your flights, please just pity their apologetic parents. Came back to sweet home almost around midnight and was nice to get in our own bed. We had a great trip with WONDERFUL memories and experiences, lots of mosquito bites and tons of laundry to do!
Thanks to all on this forum for making the trip so wonderful and hasslefree with advice and suggestions! I hope you have enjoyed my trip report, because I enjoyed all the trip reports, soooo much in here as they take me back on that beach with pure, clean, white sand slipping between the toes and warm water splashing as you swim in that blue sea!

All the more reason to keep going back...just tell Vishy you'll have an error-free vacation with enough practice. I figure in another 100 trips you'll be perfect! :D

What a great day! You guys really pack a lot into a day, I must say, makes me feel like a slacker!

Do you remember what time it was that Dos Ceibas said you were too early? I went there in 2006 and I was also early, but they had a bonfire in their fire pit and other guests were just hanging out there. I joined them and pretty soon we were all having a great time and I ended up eating with some of them when dinner time finally rolled around.

So I guess there's a difference between "early" and "too early", just wondering what it was. Glad you went to Maya Tulum. I really like their restaurant--breakfast is great there too. Shame about their seaweed issues mucking up their beach.

Great pictures, by the way, as usual! :)

There are few sadder feelings in life than walking out on that beach for the last time, hearing the waves crashing, feeling the breeze on your face, thinking when or if you will ever get back to this awesome place, then turning and walking away. It's like Sunday evening, looking back on a great weekend and thinking about the work week ahead times one hundred.

Thanks for the great trip report.

Yeah, I think Dos Ceibas has a different schedule in the low season. We showed up there for dinner at 7:30 and they told us no dinner until 8! Kevin was so hungry he didn't even want to wait the 30 minutes. I'm sure we spent that much time walking to Amansala, where we ended up. We ended up never eating at DC because we were always hungry long before 8!

I'm hoping to tie it in to a trop to Mpls, but I don't know when I'm going up there yet. I suppose I could try to nail that down tomorrow, just can't promise yet.

BR, Why don't you let us know when you get the Mpls trip planned (Minnie, how far is that from you???) and let us know? We can go from there? We found Dos Ciebas from the beach but I remember when we parked at La Zebra at night, and thinking the walk from the parking lot was awfully dark and scary.

I just love the wall of lights there. We never ate there, but really enjoyed their happy hour and the ambiance of that place. At it was leaving Dos Ciebas that we got to see a turtle laying her eggs! So I just associate Dos Ciebas with the highlights of my trip!

Thanks for the great trip report!

HOw are the cabanas at Dos Ceibas, anyone?

beachreader
20th November 2007, 11:47 AM
Wide variety of prices and quality at Dos Ceibas. For me, the only ones I'd want are the two (upper and lower) right at the top of the primary dune--they're the most "beachfront", but they're not sand-in-your-toes beachfront. Nice rooms, though. I saw a few (not those) when I was there, some really very nice ones, then some really cheap little ones with a shared bath (not a very nice bath) down by the parking area. Definitely cheap, though, maybe worth it since their beach is so lovely, but so far behind the primary dune that there wouldn't be any breeze at all.
