Hi,

We visited Tulum in 2003 (Cabanas Copal) and thought it was great. Have been struggling to make time to get back there ever since. Are finally going next month. Wanted to know if anyone had tried using a phone on the Cingular cell network down there. Not that it will break my heart if I have to leave the phone behind. I'd just like to know if it's worthwhile to pack another gadget.

Thanks!

Neville

Cingular works well in Tulum if your phone is 1900mhz and works on the GSM network. You have to activate international service with Cingular a few weeks before you leave. Check with Cingular. I know some Cingular service works on the 800 mhz in the East but is 1900mhz in the West. I know the 1900mhz works well because that is what I have. I don't know about the 800mhz service in the Tulum area.

Good thread, as my wife and I will be heading down to Copal for the first time next May and are also Cingular customers. I activated Cingular international roam this past May for our trip to Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, but could not get the phone to work. I know I had a tri-band, but don't think I had the 1900 mhz range. Could be why stuff didn't happen for me.

I'll upgrade before our next trip, as soon as my contract is up for renewal and they BEG me to buy a new phone ;)

Thanks folks,
Dan

PS - Neville, I'll look for your trip report as I can't seem to read enough about Cabanas Copal and wish we were going next week!

my cingular always works in tulum..dont know what coverage/plan i have but it always picks up soon as we land..one note though..sometimes depending where on the beach or where we are, the coverage is sketchy...like i need to climb on the rocks at the ocean's edge in front of Peida Escondida or Copal/Zahra to get a signal, but on our lot which is further south near Las Ranitas it always works well... so you never
