I can never get enough of Barry and his fish ball groupies! I remember when it was unusual to spot Barry..if he let you see him you counted yourself lucky..now the Barry clan seems to be doing well in Akumal..hope that means the bay is healthy and happy!

As always, turtles make me smile!

Thanks MM!

I snorkeled at Akumal Bay in Akumal - we stayed there for 6 days before we went to Tulum. You just enter the water in front of the Lo Ha restaurant, snorkel out to the buoys which are in a horseshoe circle, and you should be able to see all that I did. Here is a link to a map of Akumal bay with the areas indicated.

I wonder if he was diving trying shake the sucker on his belly. Ick. I know, they provide services, but still, ick. I'd hate the idea of something attaching itself to me like that! :D

Great pics! Last we were in Akumal they were talking about requiring snorkelers to wear vests for safety and also banning flippers in Akumal Bay - do you know if they have done this? If so, we can leave the flippers at home this trip! If you have to wear vests - could you buy or rent them there?

When we were there in August people were using fins although I didn't, just didn't feel the need to use them. It wasn't required but I rented a vest from the dive shop by Lol Ha restaurant, I think it was $5 for the day.

my understanding is that they "require" them, but it's still Mexico.

They're probably required if you take the snorkle tour from the dive shop. The people I saw entering the water from shore that were taking the tour all had on vests.

No one said anything to us about wearing vests, but we were not on a tour. I think you are correct that if on a tour, you have to wear a vest.

BD is correct...it's not Mexican law that you wear a life vest. It often is a requirement of snorkel operators (for insurance purposes) that you put one on.
