View Full Version : CESiak distance?

Anyone know how far into the reserve the CESiak tent hotel/visitors' center is? I know someone walked all the way down there on the beach, so it can't be too far, right?

Just wondering if it's too far, too uncomfortable, to come up to Tulum for dinner once in a while.

Or maybe I could just stay for a night or two. That's a thought.

Beachreader, it's 4km from the arch.

I concur. When we took the tour last May they picked us up at our hotel and told us the same - 4 km from the entrance/arch.

As nicely paved and smooth as that road is -- NOT! -- it's probably just as fast to walk the distance along the beach as it would be to drive it out.

Thanks. Maybe we'll just do the tour first and check it out for next time. There are two main kinds of tour, right? The one where you're in your own kayak, and another in an electric boat? Or am I thinking of something else? I need to do a search on Sian Ka'an tours.

In May we were deciding between the "Canal Tour" and the "Bird Watching Tour", which due to the lack of birds at that time of year were the same thing. They both used a panga/fishing boat with outboard motors on them. You covered quite a bit of distance on them. I do recall reading something about kayaks, but perhaps its best just to check Cesiak's website for options.

Have a blast.

What time of year did you do the tour?

The end of May.

Cool, thanks. Maybe late November will be better for birds, having made their migrations south. I'm kind of digging the idea of a kayak thing so we can get some exercise as well, but I bet it'll be hot, and the idea of spilling out where gators live freaks me out big time.

Hmmm, maybe the panga sounds better now. :D

BR...we did the canal tour in the beginning of December and there were a TON of birds. They actually have three tour types:

Canal Tour
Sunset Tour
Kayak TourIn the Kayak tour you can explore the wetlands inside the biosphere reserve and bird watch around the beautiful bird nesting-island. You can have a single or double kayak accompanied by a guide for $45 per person. You can also go out on your own for $20 for a single kayak or $30 for a double kayak for three hours.

Thanks, Lee. Those tours are all through CESiak, right? So I'd just have to swing by their office there on the beach road and see what's what when we're down there. I think we'll definitely do at least one of the tours if not two.

Yes...check them out at www.cesiak.org (http://www.cesiak.org) for more details. We met the woman who does the kayak guided tours...really nice and knowledgeable. Also, I've emailed the "top guy" several times and he's really great. A very well-run group. Even though we own a two-person kayak and are pretty skilled at manuvering, we'd still opt for the guided tour as they possess a wealth of info. It will definitely be money well spent.

BR, we're going to do the same thing on our trip in a few weeks!

They also have an office on 307, just south of the entrance to the ruins. Dan said it looked a bit like a realtor's office at first. :)

From La Zebra, we could drive to cesiak (in a jeep) in about 10 or 15 (max) minutes. It was bumpy, but not horrible. And we vowed to stay there next time we go. The restaurant was amazing. The bar great. The service really wonderful. The view - you can't beat it. Ocean off to one side, lagoon to the other; and at night they have FIREFLIES in the treetops...

We didn't do either of the tours, we ran out of time lazing around on the beach; but, like I said, I'd definitely want to stay there next time I go. Maybe even for half my trip time.

Lulu, did you check out any of the tent rooms? They look really nice. I didn't realize it was so close to the arch, for some reason imagined it was an hour away.

We can't afford to rent a Jeep (unless a third friend joins us, which is suddenly a possibility), would a Pointer or a Tsuru make it?

You shouldn't have a problem AS LONG AS there hasn't been any heavy rains. You can also get a taxi to take you down there but a basic rental car will get you there but plan on taking it pretty slow!

Yeah, you definitely don't NEED a jeep, it just gets you there without as much worry, I think. The night we were there, a HUGE HUGE HUGE storm blew through and by the time we were set to drive home it was kind of a nightmare at one part - like driving through a lake - where I would've been nervous to be in anything lower to the ground, but hubby was nonchalant as usual.

We didn't check out the tent cabins up close, but my general impression was that they were really quite nice (only minus is the shared bath and composting toilets...) And, like I said, it's on my VERY short list of places to stay next time we go. I think 3 nights there would be really great - the beach there is amazing, and then we could also use one of the days to do an extended tour, and maybe another day to drive deeper into the reserve.

And funny, I too thought it was like an hour past the arch. Once we realized how close it was, we decided we'd have eaten dinner there much more often if we could have. (BTW, the restaurant is closed on Mondays, we tried to eat there on our last Monday down there, no luck...)

Thanks, that's great to know. We might have to drive down there for dinner some night, or better yet, stay for dinner after our tour. Maybe they'll let us see the rooms up close and I'll take some pics for the record.
