We're a family of four, heading to the Yucatan for two weeks next month. While I'd like to stay a couple of days in PdC, since we're with two boys (10,11) it won't be a real 'party vacation'. I'm looking at Tulum for a couple of days, and maybe Akumal for a couple of days as well too. I'm even thinking we may do three days at the Copacabana - have never done AI, but the boys like the idea of all-you-can-eat and bottomless glasses of pop .

I've come across a place on the Net called Villa Tulum. It appears to be a small hotel with a swimming pool. I have no idea of where things are in Tulum, but this place is supposed to be near the Sian K'aan reserve. Is that near everything else? I understand there is a small town to Tulum, but is the 'hotel strip' walking distance to that. Has anyone any experience with this place? I've searched and there's no mention of it on this site, so I'm curious what the scoop is. I'm also thinking about Los Lirios, which it seems a lot of you regulars like.

While I'm at it, I'd like an opinion on 'water shoes'. Frankly, I'm a bit confused how people use them, but have read they're useful where there is coral or it's rocky. Do you kick them off at the water's edge, or snorkel with them on? I know this sounds silly, but it's one of the details that is bugging me. How necessary are they? I've done a search, and it seems that quite a few people do use them, so if the consensus is that they're a good thing to have I'll get them for all of us.

Thanks for answering what probably seem like inane newbie questions.
